Goldfinch Two-Bird House

Rodney, Coleman, Isaiah, Simon and Shameka

American Goldfinch
Scientific nameBaeolophus bibolor

The American Goldfinch is a very common sight around Ohio. They can be found around semi open spaces such as a roadside or clearing in the woods. The Goldfinch tends to forage in flocks, so they can be difficult to miss. However, during mating season they keep their distance from others. They generally eat seeds and other small weeds they may find. Humans have affected all sorts of wildlife by industrialization and whatnot, and now the goldfinch has become somewhat domesticated. The species continues to thrive based on help such as birdhouses and feeders.

Architecture style

The architecture we chose was a building designed by Tatiana Bilbao. It is a modern style structure. It is a 4 story building that looks like 4 glass boxes loosely stacked on top of each other.

The Design Process

As any Design Process goes, we started with a general idea of what house we wanted to make for our bird that we chose being the American Finch. Basing it off some modern hotels that we found on the internet, we decided to go with that design. Originally, there was 5 sketches and we compared and contrasted their designs to finalize the one we wanted; then created a more detailed sketch. Afterwards we had some basic dimensions and made a card-stock model, which did not turn out as well as the dimensions were way to huge for the bird that we chose. Afterwards we made a smaller card-stock model that would better fit the bird. Then we skipped over the foam model and went for the finalized version.

The Birdhouse

Glen Helen Raptor Center and Riverside Health Care

When searching for a location we had sent out loads of emails, and as expected we got two locations. Our group had been approve to cut two separate bird houses. Now we're sending our birdhouse to both the Glen Helen Raptor Center, and Riverside Health Care. The Raptor Center is a informational nature preserve to inform kids. While the Health Care Center has a personal connection with one of our group members since their mom goes there..

For the Birds is a project of the Dayton Regional STEM School. 2019
