Carolina Wren
Scientific name: Thryothorus ludovicianus
The Carolina Wren was chosen by our group because we were fascinated by their petite nature and wanted to create something that resembled it just as well. A light tan underbelly and an umber top coat with small hints of cream white along the eye forms our fascinating, little bird. The small birds forage in pairs. When they are in the pair, they are there for life. Thickets, Swamps, specific ravines, and wood areas are where the bird resides.
Architecture
The Carson Mansion has towering, Victorian-Style roofs with minor detailing along the rooflines. Various colors are also included into the design. We chose to include small circle designs on the side to add a small detail. Our roof is supposed to resemble the Victorian roof with a tall, pointed, sloped roof.
The Design Process
This is the birdhouse project, where we are creating a birdhouse for a bird of our choice, in this case, the Carolina Wren. We then gave them to an organization. In order to achieve this we had to go through the design process. First, we drew a net outline on a piece of cardstock-like paper then we cut it out. After we cut the net, we had to then fold it and tape it together to make it 3D. However, the roof was not steep enough and it really did not look like the original sketch so then we went on to make a foam model. When making this foam model we decided that we would make the roofs a little longer so they were not so flat. While doing this we were also working on our CAD model to get it prepared to laser cut. The last step was to put our final cut birdhouse together.

The Birdhouse

Trinity Nursing Home
Trinity Nursing Home is a Christian organization that cares for the elderly. They have many events for their patients, and they love the outdoors. They participate in many social events at Trinity. The patients love the birds and wildlife around the nursing home. They have a huge aviary with birds of all colors, and they would benefit from our birdhouse. We found this place through one of our group members, who volunteers there, and has had family members living in the establishment.
Clark State Community College
Clark State is a popular community college in the Dayton region, which many students attend. They offer several of programs, degrees, and classes to help their students succeed. They have a very large campus in Springfield, complete with a lake. There are many outdoor seating areas for students to study or congregate when the weather is nice. The campus also has wooded areas and is home to several birds and other types of wildlife. Clark State was one of the major sponsors for the DRSS 10 year gala, and it would be great to provide their campus with a birdhouse from our school. We found this place through one of the group member’s parent’s job.
