Cardinal
Scientific name: Cardinalis cardinalis

Cardinals, or cardinalis, are long-tailed songbirds with a thick bill and prominent red crest. These birds do not migrate and are permanent residents throughout the year. They tend to nest in wedged forks of small branches in saplings, shrubs, or vines. As for their diet, they usually eat seeds and fruit, sometimes bugs.

The Pantheon

Architect: Apollodorus

Specific structure: The pantheon

Period/style: classical

Time period: 850bc- ad476

The Greek Pantheon, found in Rome, Italy, are made of concrete. Originally cornered with bronze, marble, or brick. The porch is a Greek styling; the circular main building is a roman styling. There are columns, a dome and hole at the top to make the sides and roof of the building. This architecture was chosen because the two styles, both Greek and Roman, were combined to make a structure greatly influenced by the time period.

The Design Process

To start, ideas drawn out and edited several times. In the picture of the sketches, it shows multiple phases of the house. Some are cylinder with a cone shaped roofs; others are rectangular with a triangular prism for the roof. Once the design was decided, measurements were finalized. The project had a limited amount of supplies, which means that the project needed to stay in the limit of wood allotted to the project. To start, the design was drawn on card stock as first draft. It did not turn out as planned; some measurements were what they needed to be. The design was edited and redrawn on foam board, cut it out, and taped. This made sure that the edits would work and that no further error had been made concerning the dimensions. After we put it into CAD and got it ready for the laser cutter. Putting the design into adobe illustrator, which was sent to the laser printer. Once cut, the wood was glued together and caulked to make the product watertight. When the bird feeder dried, it was painted over to prevent the wood from being damaged by the surrounding environment or moisture. To complete the feeder, the eye hook was screwed in to hang the supporting rope from. Finally, the feeder taken to the sight where the bird feeder was placed in front of a patient’s window on tree branch.

VITAS Hospice

VITAS Hospice in Dayton is the organization that we will be donating our final product to. Hospice is a place where people go who have a limited amount of time to live and need metical care until then. Many of them are bed-bound or can’t go anywhere. So, we made this bird feeder to bring joy to the people who need it most. Hopefully we can develop a bond with the people at hospice and visit the residence there.
