The Baltimore Oriole
Scientific name: Icterus galbula
Baltimore Oriole's usually build their nest in a tree, hanging on a branch. The birdhouse should be hung on a tree 10-30 feet in the air. The roof of the house opens to clean out anything and the drain holes are there to drain out any water that may have entered the bird house. The hanging part of the bird house is where you can put food for the orioles. The orioles diet can consist of half cut oranges and dark colored fruit.

Architect Akishisa Hirata
The house that this birdhouse is based off of in the Overlap House made by Akihisa Hirata. The house is a two floor house that is divided by a fenced-in garden, and is connected by stairs. I really wanted to incorporate Japanese architecture because I think its really pretty and interesting.
The Design Process
Our birdhouse is designed from a Japanese style. The house overlaps and is unique. We made many changes to accommodate the Baltimore Oriole. One change we made is to the bottom part of the house/feeder. The change was to add drain holes like a strainer, so this feature is intended to remove any liquids that may be trapped at the base of the feeder. We also added a feature of being able to move the roof plates. The reason for this feature is to make cleaning the inside of the birdhouse. After finding out that the feeder half of the house would attract predators we decided to just remove it from the design. We had to adjust the CAD model so that we would be able to cut it out, this also meant that we could use less material.

The Birdhouse
Baltimore Oriole's usually build their nest in a tree, hanging on a branch. The birdhouse should be hung on a tree branch 10-30 feet in the air. The roof of the house opens to clean out the nest after the birds have gone. The Oriole's may return to the same territory the next year but do not reuse the nest. There are drain holes in the bottom to drain out any water that may enter the house.
Huber Heights YMCA
The YMCA is a great place and is a meeting place and a home to many people. It is a community that is super close and likes the welfare of every one. If we were to send our bird house to the YMCA it would be in good hands of people that care and would take care of the birdhouse and any birds that would be there. The YMCA also stands for Young Men’s Christian Organization, but it is most widely known for the fitness and fun activities that they put on for the community. They hold fundraisers and classes for people who can’t afford them.
