Carolina Chickadee House
Scientific name: Pocile carolinesis

The Carolina Chickadee has a fluffy black head, gray wings, and a white body. This bird is common and widespread across lower elevations, river groves, shade trees and well-wooded suburbs. The Carolina Chickadee is part of the Chickadee and Titmice family and forages mostly by hopping among twigs gleaning food from surface. They can mate at any time during their lifetime. They lay white eggs with fine dots of reddish brown, laying them 5-8 eggs at a time.

Architecture Muromachi style

This style inspired our idea for the birdhouse because the Jisho-ji is a temple in a forest-type area. The Carolina Chickadee is a bird that lives in the forest as a permanent resident. Therefore, it is a good place to have a bird house shaped like a temple. The main features of the Jisho-ji is angled roofs that curved back up a small amount. There is much more overhang compared to American houses. Curved roofs to ward off evil spirits characterize temples from this period.

The Design Process

First, we assigned roles and then we sketched a model. This lasted two days. In this time, we figured out some of the nuances of the model. Next, we made cardstock model and proceeded to a foam model. All the while, the Computer Aided Designers (CADers) and writers were working on the Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and websites respectively. Then we finished the CAD model and assembled the laser printing. The original idea of this birdhouse was that this birdhouse would be hanged, but the Sugarcreek Parks District asked us if we could mount the house so that they can take our house. The design was more detailed with shingles on the roof, but we were running out of time so we simplified our design. In the end, we will place it on the post.

The Birdhouse

To clean the birdhouse undo the latch and flip up top half of the house. Then you dump the birdhouse out. Damp paper towels or wipes could be used to clean the house out if necessary. The cleaning should take place every fall after the bird has vacated the house.

Bellbrook Sugar Creeks Park District

The Goal of the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek parks is to preserve nature. This Organization has been around since 1972 and has maintained parks all around Bellbrook and Sugarcreek since. Some of the most notable locations are Bellbrock and Magee parks. Its central headquarters is off Washington mill road and are also known as the community center. We chose it because it was close to home for one of the group member and he had a contact so it would be possible to get to them.
